Calls for overdose memorial to be set-up in Edinburgh
There's calls for a memorial to be set-up to mark the lives of people lost to drug overdose in Edinburgh
There's call for a memorial to be established for those who have died due to drug overdosing ahead of International Overdose Awareness Day.
It comes from the SNP group in the City of Edinburgh Council.
Councillor Finlay McFarlane is set to bring the motion before the full council on Thursday.
The City Centre councillor has also led a campaign for action on drug deaths including establishing an Edinburgh Safe Consumption Room and Community Drug Checking Programmes.
The motion being brought forward will ensure that Edinburgh Council marks International Overdose Awareness Day every year along with the rest of the world by establishing a permanent memorial as well as sign posting key support services on its social media channels.
McFarlane commented on the motion: “Grieving families and friends deserve a dedicated place in the city to remember without stigma those loved ones who have tragically died due to overdose.”
“We must focus all of our efforts on equipping people with the tools to have grown-up and stigma-free conversations about the risks, provide the services to rehabilitate those who need support and ensure we are a city of first responders and able to spot and act quickly if we see the signs of someone experiencing overdose.”
The day is marked on the 31st of August, and it is hoped that the capital’s council will use this day to support those who have lost loved ones to drug overdosing.
