A man has been seriously injured in what police have described as a completely unprovoked'' early-morning attack outside a pub.
The man, aged in his 30s, was approached by another man as he walked towards North Bridge in Edinburgh having left the nearby Whistlebinkies pub moments earlier.
The suspect then struck him to the head before running off on the Royal Mile heading east at about 3am on Friday.
The man was taken to hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.
Police have issued a description of the attacker and appealed for witnesses.
He is described as white, 5ft 10ins, in his mid-30s with a medium build and a bald head. He was wearing a light-coloured jacket, black t-shirt and jeans.
Detective Sergeant Paul Greig said: This would appear to have been a completely unprovoked attack that unfortunately resulted in an innocent man being seriously assaulted.
The victim had been enjoying a night-out when the suspect approached him and attacked him for no obvious reason.''
Our inquiries into this matter are ongoing and I today appeal to anyone who recognises the description of the attacker or who may have been in the area of North Bridge during the early hours of Friday to come forward immediately.''
