A gang forced their way into a man's home and attacked him with a weapon in a violent and unprovoked assault'' on Sunday (5th June).

Police said up to six men went to the house in South Queensferry at about 3.40pm and barged in after the man answered the door.

They then attacked him, at least one using a weapon, before fleeing in two vehicles.

The victim sustained injuries to his head and body, and was taken to St John's Hospital in Livingston for treatment. He has since been discharged.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident on William Black Place.

Detective Constable Ross Nicol said: This was a violent and unprovoked assault that left the victim with painful injuries that are fortunately not believed to be life-threatening.

I'm satisfied this was an isolated incident and there is not thought to be any threat to other members of the community.

Our enquiries are at an early stage, however we understand the vehicles that the suspects used may have been in the area prior to the incident.

I want to hear from anyone who saw these vehicles or who saw any suspicious behaviour.''

The suspects drove off in an electric blue coloured three-door Vauxhall Astra VXR and a large black vehicle.

The first suspect is white, between 5ft 8ins and 6ft tall and in his 30s or 40s. He is balding with dark hair, clean shaven and stocky and wore a blue hooded top.

The second male is said to be about 5ft 5ins and of average build. He was wearing a black Buff or similar covering the lower part of his face, a black leather jacket and jeans.

The remaining suspects are said to be white, in their 30s and were wearing biker-style clothing with black Buffs or similar partially covering their faces. All the suspects had Edinburgh accents.
