Teenager dies in hospital after medical emergency at East Lothian school

Staff and pupils at Loretto School are being supported after the tragic incident

A teenager has sadly died in hospital after a medical emergency at an East Lothian boarding school.

Emergency services were called to Loretto School shortly before 7pm last Tuesday.

The 17-year-old boy passed away in Edinburgh's Royal Infirmary a short time later.

A spokesperson for the school said:

“Following a medical emergency last Tuesday evening at the school, paramedics were called to the school to treat a pupil.

"Sadly, he passed away a short time later in hospital.

"The school community is devastated and we are giving his family all the support we can. We have also been working with pupils and staff impacted by this tragic news and that is our focus for now.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 6.50pm on Tuesday, 2 May 2023, police were called to a school in the Linkfield Road area of Musselburgh following concern for a 17-year-old male. He was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, where he died a short time later.

"At this time, there would appear to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and a report was submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
