A man is critically injured after he was knocked down in Edinburgh's Grassmarket by a car which failed to stop.

Shiona McCallum has the story:

The hit and run crash, involving a red car, happened at around 9.45pm last night (Sun).

The vehicle was driven off towards West Port and Lothian Road.

The victim, who is in his 50s, was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Police say they are chasing a strong lead but have appealed for witnesses to get in touch.

Detective Chief Inspector Michelle Johnson said: "The car drove off towards West Port and Lothian Road and I want to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and may have seen the collision or the red car afterwards.

"Officers are carrying out inquiries in the Grassmarket, which remains closed to traffic.''

The Grassmarket was shut on the south side between Victoria Street and West Port with diversions in place.
