Five Sisters Zoo in West Lothian will soon welcome two new lionesses which have been rescued from war-torn Ukraine.
Two four-year-old lionesses, named Luna and Plusza, endured the distress of conflict and displacement in Eastern Ukraine, after being evacuated from an area affected by heavy shelling in 2022.
They were first sheltered in Kyiv before moving to Poland and later to Natuurhulpcentrum in Belgium,
Now, the pair will join Skinny the lion, the last remaining of the first pride the zoo rescued from a travelling circus in Belgium back in 2015.
Gary Curran, head of carnivores, said: “The arrival of Luna and Plusza is a continuation of our long-standing commitment to giving lions a second chance at life.
“Our team is prepared to provide these lionesses with the best care possible, ensuring that they are able to live out their lives in peace, just as we did for Boss, Skinny, and the others.”
The lionesses’ new home will feature a specially designed habitat, providing space and comfort after their challenging journey across multiple countries.
The Zoo said it remains dedicated to animal welfare and looks forward to giving the public the opportunity to learn about the importance of its rescue and conservation efforts.
