Irvine Welsh backs plan to revive Leith Theatre

Leith Theatre is welcoming the support of Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh as a massive boost to their campaign.

The famous writer is spearheading the £250,000 drive to get the neglected arts venue back up and running.

It’s been nearly 30 years since the theatre last hosted a show.

The Trainspotting author has now agreed to become patron of Leith Theatre.

Forth News has been hearing from Chair of the Leith Theatre Trust Jack Hunter…

The building was nearly sold off by the Edinburgh Council in 2004 to pay for the refurbishment of the Kings Theatre but backlash from locals stopped the move.

The Council’s Leisure and Cultural Services Committee voted at the end of April 2012 to begin negotiations to grant the Trust a 5-year licence over the theatre.

The Leith Theatre Trust took over the lease from City of Edinburgh Council on 18 January 2016.

The theatre will reopen temporarily in May when it will be used as a pop-up venue for the Hidden Door Festival, which specialises in transforming run-down spaces.
