How Edinburgh hopes to save Princes Street from the high street collapse

It will soon be much easier for cafes and restaurants to open in ground floor properties on Princes Street.

New planning guidance - allowing a more flexible approach - is likely to be backed by Edinburgh Council's planning committee next Wednesday (29 Jan).

It will then be sent to the Scottish Government for final approval.

Castle Street, Frederick Street and Hanover Street will also be covered by the change.

The review was launched as high street retailers struggle to compete with online shopping.

There is also concern some stores will move from Princes Street to the new St James development, creating more vacant buildings.
