Hibernian defender Paul McGinn has been cited by the Scottish FA for comments made about referee John Beaton after the League Cup final.

The Easter Road side lost the game at Hampden 2-1 with McGinn uphappy with some of the decisions made during the match.

Tom Rogic took a quick free-kick in the build up to Celtic's second goal - with McGinn saying the Hibs players were expecting a substitution to be made.

He described Beaton performance as “inept” and could now face a suspension with a disciplinary hearing taking place in January 13.

Scottish FA rules say players and club officials can be cited if they “criticise the Decision(s) and/or performance(s) of any or all match official(s) in such a way as to indicate bias or incompetence on the part of such match official; or (ii) make remarks about such match official(s) which impinge on his character.”

Speaking to the media soon after the game on Sunday, McGinn said: "It's not a foul and then the fourth official is holding the board. I think Jamie Murphy could stand over the ball, as you do, but he steps away from it, to assume 'sub'.

"No control over the situation, (Beaton) just lets it happen, and the goal goes in. I don't know if you see me running to him straight away and get myself booked. But it's just inept.

"Even 90 seconds later, Celtic are going to make a sub and (Anthony) Ralston takes a quick throw-in, and he whistles it back for the sub to happen.

"I ran to him and just said 'What's going on? There is no way we would have got that the other way. No way.' That's why I got booked."
