The SNP group in Edinburgh say they've begun "formal negotiations" with the Greens with the aim of forming a coalition in the council.

SNP Group Leader Adam McVey has described the talks as "constructive discussions".

The 29 combined seats wouldn't quite give the agreement a majority in the chambers - 32 Councillors are required for that.

But it would mean the Tories, Labour and Lib Dems would have to all vote against any given issue to block moves.

McVey told Forth News:

“The SNP and Green groups are having constructive discussions about how we can work together to implement the policies that we campaigned for and that our residents voted for.

"These meetings have been positive and focused on the further progress we can deliver for Edinburgh.

“We believe this coalition gives Edinburgh the best way forward to tackle climate, fight poverty and improve the core services we all depend on."

It's been almost two weeks since the election, and as more local authorities around the country form administrations the requirement for getting down to business is growing greater.

As of yet we've had no indication of long how these negotiations may take.

McVey continued:

“The City deserves clear and strong Leadership and I am confident we can provide that. We look forward to continuing discussions with Green Councillors to explore how we can make sure the Capital has a fair and successful future.”

We've asked the Greens for comment.
