Vandals in Edinburgh have toppled over the gravestone of Greyfriars Bobby’s master – just days ahead of a ceremony honouring the loyal pooch.

The headstone of John Gray, popularly known as ‘Auld Jock’, was attacked at some point over the weekend.

The story goes that Bobby, Jock’s loyal Skye terrier, kept vigil over his master’s grave for 14 years after Jock passed away.

In a statement, Edinburgh Council confirmed that the gravestone will not be re-erected in time for this Sunday’s memorial to Bobby.

A Council spokesperson said: “Following an inspection earlier this week by our structural engineers, the headstone has been made safe.

“We intend to re-erect it next week following the installation of new foundations. In the meantime signage will be put up to advise the public of these plans."
