Gas is starting to be restored to homes around Falkirk after a network failure left thousands without supplies overnight.

Operators SGN say they are prioritising those most in need, and it will take a few days to get around all homes affected.

Supplies are now being reconnected in the Bainsford, Carron, Carronshore, Larbert, Langlees, New Carron Village, Skinflats and Stenhousemuir areas.

Around 8,000 homes were left without gas on Sunday, with a warning it could be Friday or even into next weekend before it was restored to everyone.

Fourteen schools, nurseries and education facilities in the area were closed on Monday due to the issue.

SGN says: "Our engineers will be revisiting each affected property to reconnect your gas supply, which involves carrying out safety checks.

"It’s important you don’t try to turn on your gas supply yourself.

"We have more than 8,000 properties to visit and it will take us a couple of days to reach everyone.

"We’re prioritising those most vulnerable members of the community first, but we’ll be making every effort to get gas back on to everyone’s homes as soon as possible."

Electric heaters and hotplates have been handed out to residents with young children and vulnerable older people.
