Rod Petrie, the former Hibernian chairman and chief executive, has died at the age of 69 after a long struggle with cancer.

He passed away peacefully at his home in Longniddry, surrounded by family.

Petrie was at the helm at Easter Road for more than 20 years and part-owned the club in partnership with Sir Tom Farmer, who died in May.

As well as his service to Hibs, Petrie also held senior roles on the boards of the Scottish Football Association and the Scottish Premier League, later going on to become president of the SFA.

Hibs said they were deeply saddened by his passing and paid tribute to his long-standing contribution to the club.

SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster paid tribute, describing Petrie as “a hugely respected figure right across the Scottish game” who “combined sharp intellect with a strong sense of principle.”

He added: “His true passion outside of his family and friends was Hibernian FC and he provided incredible service to the club in his 28 years there. We also worked extremely closely with Rod in his time on Scottish football’s Joint Response Group during Covid, and he was a vital figure in helping steer our game through that challenging period. He will be very sadly missed.”
