One of the world's most famous steam locomotives is set to make a flying visit to our region later.

It's understood this weekend's appearance is the only chance rail buffs will get to catch a glimpse of it on home soil this year.

The Flying Scotsman is spending the summer hauling special tours across the UK.

Today (Thursday) it's making its way up from London to Edinburgh as part of a sold-out four-day event.

It's being operated by The Steam Dreams Rail Company, who revealed it's their first steam trip since the coronavirus pandemic struck.

In a Tweet earlier, a spokesperson said: "It is a very exciting day! Today, Flying Scotsman is headed for Edinburgh.

"This marks our first Holiday By Steam since The Emerald Isle Express to Ireland in September 2019 and we cannot wait to welcome passengers on board."

The Flying Scotsman was pictured at York station earlier as it makes it's way up the East Coast Main Line.

The train's timetable is a closely-guarded secret - to discourage people from trespassing on the line.

But, in a screenshot shared on a local community page, it's revealed the famous locomotive is expected to stop at Berwick-upon-Tweed at 6.08pm tonight, before departing at 6.46pm.

It's also due to pass the new station currently under construction at Reston (7pm); Grantshouse (7.12pm) and Dunbar (7.26pm), before reaching Edinburgh Waverley.

The Flying Scotsman is then expected to remain in Scotland for two days before returning south via Preston on Sunday.

A spokesperson for the locomotive said: "While we understand interest in Flying Scotsman will be extremely high, we urge those wishing to view it on its tour dates to do so from a safe vantage point.

"It is vital that spectators do not venture onto the railway, particularly when it is on the mainline as a full timetable of regular services will also be running."
