A fire crew has come under attack while dealing with a deliberately set fire in West Lothian.

Firefighters were pelted with bricks and bottles by a group of hostile youths as they tried to extinguish a blaze on Friday evening.

They came under a hail of missiles after attending reports of woodland set alight around the village of Whitecross, near Linlithgow, at around 8pm.

Linlithgow Fire Station tweeted that no-one was injured and police turned up quickly to help.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "We were called to Manuel Terrace, Whitecross around 8pm on Friday April 24, following reports fire fighters were under attack.

"We assisted our emergency service colleagues to allow them to do their job, and inquiries into the incident are ongoing.''

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said an update with further information was being prepared.
