Teenager dies after car hit by falling tree

The 19-year-old couldn't be saved after tragedy on Friday in Ayrshire

A man has died after his car was struck by a falling tree in East Ayrshire as Scotland was hit by exteme weather.

The incident happened around 6.45am on Friday on the B743 near Mauchline and involved a blue Ford Focus.

It happened before the major red alert for high winds came into force across much of the country.

The alert level was amber at the time.

The driver, a 19-year-old man, was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow for treatment. He died on Saturday, 25 January.

Sergeant Chris McColm of the Road Policing Unit said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who died.”
