We can reveal nearly 900 trains were cancelled on the Edinburgh to Glasgow line last year.

Figures obtained from Scotrail show that in 2017, a total of 41,441 trains were scheduled to run between Glasgow and Edinburgh, but 891 services were cancelled.

433 were cancelled because of signalling and point failures, and 458 were down to train faults and staff shortages.

Any train that runs but misses a stop for any reason fails its public performance measure and is considered a cancellation.

Of the five large operators in the UK, Scotrail remains the best performing.

A Scotrail Alliance spokesperson said: "Despite recent challenges, ScotRail remains the best performing large operator in the UK. For nine out of ten of our trains to have met the target time over the past year is a strong foundation on which to build.

"But we want to deliver even more for our customers, and because we rightly expect the highest standards, we are implementing a number of initiatives to improve both the reliability of our trains and the supporting infrastructure.

"We are investing hundreds of millions of pounds improving Scotland's railway. The work we are doing will mean faster journeys, more seats and better services for our customers.
