EXCLUSIVE: 51 health buildings across Scotland deemed structurally "at risk"
Last updated 22nd May 2017
We can exclusively reveal that 51 health buildings across Scotland are structurally "at risk" following the Edinburgh school crisis.
It's feared that the buildings may have similar defects found at 17 Edinburgh primaries and secondaries that were forced to close last year.
Our investigation has discovered Scotland's health boards are now having to carry out repairs in order to make a number of their buildings safe.
The worst affected health board is NHS Tayside where 19 health buildings are known to be at risk.
NHS Tayside has told us that it may take up to nine months for the safety checks to be carried out in their entirety.
The Islay Centre and the William Fraser Unit at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital were "found to have construction defects that required remedial action".
We've been told by NHS Lothian that remedial work has now been carried out at the Islay Centre but work is still needed on the William Fraser Unit. However, NHS Lothian says the building "is considered safe".
Under NHS Forth Valley, six buildings have been identified. Those are, Forth Valley Royal Hospital, Clackmannashire Community Healthcare Centre, Stenhousemuir Health Centre, Bo'ness Health Centre, Cowie Health Centre and Shieldhill Clinic.
NHS Forth Valley says all safety checks have been carried out and these buildings are now safe.
A statement from the Health Secretary, Shona Robison, said: "“The buildings identified under this report have been found to be of a similar construction type to that used in the Edinburgh schools. However, this does not mean there is an issue with the structural integrity of the buildings. Health Boards are in the process of planning and conducting inspections and will continue to carry out remedial works as required.”
However, Shadow Health Secretary, Anas Sarwar, said: "We need the Health Secretary to make an urgent intervention and we've got to make sure that the funds required for the maintenance of these hospitals is put in place as soon as possible.
Health spokesperson for the Scottish Liberal Democrats, Alex Cole-Hamilton, said: "The first priority has to be patient and staff safety. We need to be sure that local health boards are on top of this and are taking action immediately."
