Elderly Targetted By Kirkcaldy Bogus Caller
Police in Fife are urging people to be vigilant following a number of bogus caller incidents in Kirkcaldy in recent weeks. Between Monday 6th July and Thursday 16th July properties in Overton Road, Overton Mains, Barnet Crescent, Tweed Avenue and Beatty Crescent have been targeted. Most of the victims were men and women in their 70s or 80s. The addresses were attended by a man claiming that the roof needed maintenance, that he had carried out roof maintenance, or been had been requested to carry out roof maintenance, and asking for payment. The suspect is described as white, aged approximately 25-30 years old, 5ft 8inches tall, with dark hair, and was in possession of a ladder. Sergeant Jimmy Adamson of Kirkcaldy said: “Crimes such as this, which target elderly or vulnerable people, are despicable and affect not only the victim but the entire community. “We will pursue all lines of enquiry in order to bring the offender to justice but are asking for anyone with information which can help with our enquiries to come forward. “We’re advising residents to be wary and use a door chain or bar whilst answering the door to unknown or unexpected callers. Don’t feel embarrassed about asking for ID – genuine callers will be happy to prove their identity. If you feel threatened or unsafe ask them to leave and dial 999. “We’re also asking anyone with elderly friends, neighbours or relatives to be vigilant and call 101 should they see any suspicious behaviour.”
