An investigation is underway in Edinburgh after two men were robbed by men wearing balaclavas in St Andrew Square.

The pair, who are aged 27 and 57, were trying to deposit a five-figure sum of cash at the Royal Bank of Scotland night safe at around 1:40am on Sunday 25th, August.

One of them was then assaulted by four men in masks and the bag of money was stolen.

The suspects left the scene in a dark-coloured saloon vehicle and headed down Queen Street before going onto York Place on the wrong side of the road.

Detective Chief Inspector Graham Grant from Corstorphine CID said: "I would like to re-assure the public this appears to be an isolated incident and isn't a crime that regularly occurs.

"This has been a terrifying experience for the two victims and left one of them with a facial injury.

"The centre of Edinburgh was busy last night and we urge anyone who saw the incident or the vehicle to get in touch via 101."
