A man who violently raped and sexually assaulted a woman in her Edinburgh home has been jailed for 12 years.
23-year-old Bradley Shand forced his way into the property in January last year, attacking the 61-year-old while she was home alone watching TV.
After kicking and smashing his way through the door, Shand took her phone to stop her calling for help, before carrying out a brutal assault that left her injured and traumatised.
He fled the scene but was spotted shortly after by a police officer, with blood on his hands. DNA and clothing found at the scene linked him to the attack.
Shand also admitted attempting to rob a couple and smashing their window just minutes later.
At the High Court in Edinburgh, he was handed an extended 12-year sentence - including 10 years in custody - and placed on the sex offenders register for life. He’s also banned from contacting his victim for 15 years.
Procurator Fiscal Katrina Parkes described Shand as a “sexual predator” who subjected his victim to a “horrific ordeal”.
She urged other victims of sexual violence to come forward, saying they would be supported in seeking justice.
