A man and woman have appeared in court following the recovery of a firearm by police.

Jason Smith and Nicola Clegg, both 26 and of Edinburgh, faced one charge under the Firearms Act 1968 when they appeared in private at the city's sheriff court.

They were charged following a search by officers of a house and vehicle in the Brunstane area of Edinburgh on Tuesday.

They made no plea or declaration and the case was committed for further examination.

Smith was remanded in custody and Clegg was released on bail, the Crown Office confirmed.
