A 46-year-old man who exposed himself "in a sexual manner" in front of children at a park in the Scottish Borders has avoided a jail sentence.

Elroy McArthur - who gave an address in Edinburgh - committed the offence at Victoria Park in Innerleithen on June the 25th last year.

He was originally charged with carrying out a sex act in front of five children - including one as young as ten - but last month pled guilty to the amended charge of causing a child to be present while engaging in sexual activity.

McArthur, who previously gave an address near Walkerburn, returned to Selkirk Sheriff Court for sentencing today (Monday).

Sheriff Peter Paterson noted he had no previous record of sexual offending and instead made him subject of an 18-month Community Payback Order.

As part of the disposal, McArthur - living care of a hotel in the Scottish capital - must complete 150 hours of unpaid work, as a direct alternative to custody.

He has also been placed on the Sex Offenders Register for five years.
