Thieves wearing balaclavas and riding bikes have smashed their way into an upmarket Edinburgh flat stealing safes believed to be loaded with jewellery and money.

The shocking raid happened on Learmonth Terrace in the Stockbridge area before midday on Monday.

The footage was filmed by a brave dog-walker who was passing by.

The video - now circulating on social media - shows the gang of three escaping with the safes precariously balanced on their bikes.

They appear to have used crowbars to smash their way in.

Police have confirmed they're investigating and have appealed for information.

In a statement, a Police Scotland spokesperson said:

“Around 11.45am on Monday, 24 June, 2024, we received a report of a break-in to a property at Learmonth Terrace in Edinburgh. Enquiries are ongoing.

"We also are aware of a video circulating on social media.

"We would ask anyone with any information to contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting incident 1371 of Monday, 24 June, 2024.”
