Could Edinburgh host Eurovision in 2023?
Eurovision is coming to the UK next year, could Edinburgh be the ideal host?
It's official, the Eurovision song contest is coming to the UK next year.
Organisers have confirmed the 2022 winners Ukraine will be unable to host the 2023 version of the event, due to the on-going war with Russia there.
It's customary for the winner of the previous year to hold the contest, but in the event that cannot happen, usually it's the runners up who do the honours - in this case, that's us.
Now comes the small task of deciding which city will put on the show.
Dozens have suggested they could be interested, including usual suspects such as London and Manchester, but also Dublin, Cardiff and even Swindon.
In Scotland Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen have all been suggested.
The Capital City held the 17th Eurovision song contest back in 1972, so it's got the history.
On top of that, as a twin city with the Ukrainian Capital Kyiv, it could be the perfect substitute.
Eagerness to see the extravaganza come to Edinburgh is so high, it's even brining together those on opposite sides of the political divide.
Lothian MSP Miles Briggs tells Forth News:
"The news that Eurovision Song Contest will take place in the UK is clearly disappointing for Ukraine.
"And I do hope that at some point in the future, we will see the opportunity to properly recognise Ukraine winning the competition.
"I hope that consideration will be given to a proper bid for Edinburgh and also a Scottish bid potentially
"I've written to UK ministers to outline how I think Edinburgh could be considered as a successful host city. But I hope now we can take forward consideration for how Scotland can welcome the contest and we can make it a great success."
Adam McVey is a Councillor in the Capital, he's the leader of the SNP group and the former local authority leader, he said:
" Edinburgh is used to hosting big events. We host the fringe, the international festival, the tattoo, big events are hosted here.
"And obviously recently in film, Edinburgh also hosted the fictional Eurovision competition as well and looked spectacular doing it.
"Well now is our time to host it for real and give that amazing backdrop that only Edinburgh can give to such an important and fantastic cultural enriching competition."
