Edinburgh Council underfire over education spending

This is according to a new report by Audit Scotland.

Edinburgh Council spends the smallest proportion of its budget on education out of all Scotland's local authorities.

A report by spending watchdog, Audit Scotland says the council sets aside just over 30% of its income for schools.

In South Ayrshire, the figure is 60%.

It comes as the city's population booms, putting extra pressure on school rolls.

Edinburgh Council has announced that it will build eight new schools in the city by 2024, to deal with the growing population.

Finance Convenor, Cllr Alasdair Rankin said the lower proportion of spending was due to a large number of children in Edinburgh attending private school.
