A tourist tax in Edinburgh would have a 7-night cap in new plans by Edinburgh Council.

The local authority wants to charge visitors £2 per night say in the capital - which would generate £14.6m a year for the city.

The local authority ran a consultation on the proposals which saw the majority of residents back the tax and a Chamber of Commerce survey also found two-thirds of businesses and organisations support it.

As a result of the consultation the local authority has decided to cap the tax to 7-nights in order to protect performers staying in the city for the festival season.

The plans will now be submitted to the Scottish Government for consideration.
