A Dunfermline man who snatched a schoolgirl off the street, and subjected her to a string of serious sexual assaults has been given a life sentence.

Mark Armstrong kidnapped the 15 year old last March as she made her way home from a bus stop at the Halbeath Campus of Fife College after attending netball practise.

The 26 year old took her to the grounds of a derelict cottage, and then to his own home.

Armstrong held the girl captive for 32 hours in total, telling her he had a flick knife and so she shouldn’t try to escape.

The criminal appeared at the High Court in Glasgow today, having previously pleaded guilty on Friday 10th of July 2015.

He was given an order of lifelong restriction, with a punishment part of 4 years before he can apply for parole.

However Judge Lady Wise told him there's no assumption he'll be released then, and will be kept in prison until he's no longer deemed a risk to the public.

She branded his actions “cruel, depraved and inhumane.”

Police Scotland officers arrested Armstrong on Sunday 15th of March.

They have since conducted a thorough investigation into Armstrong’s background.

Armstrong has also been convicted of a number of other crimes.

Detective Chief Inspector Michelle Johnson said: “Mark Armstrong is a depraved individual who targeted his victims and ultimately put one through a terrifying ordeal.

“It is due the courage and the bravery of Armstrong's 15-year-old victim that he has been brought to justice. It is not an overstatement to say she cracked the case for officers, and as an organisation Police Scotland pays tribute to her maturity and resolve.

“We hope that this sentence will allow Armstrong's victims, and their families, to move forward and rebuild their lives.”
