Drylaw neighbourhood centre under threat of closure

An Edinburgh community hub says it could risk being closed by July if funding of up to £70,000 isn't found by then

An Edinburgh community hub faces closure after more than 25 years serving residents.

The Drylaw neighbourhood centre is one of the only community assets in the area, but those running the site says it risks being forced to close.

Radio Forth News has been told it would require around £70,000 by July to keep the building running.

With a Council election round the corner that adds pressure for the centre, as the trustee needs to wait until results are finalised to know who their local representatives are.

Chairman of the Drylaw and Teleford Community Association Alex Dale says it would be a "real loss" if the centre was to close.

"If the center closes, we are going to lose facilities for kids to do thing in the early morning, toddlers preschool. They'll be coming in here.

"We have a young at heart Club, which meets every Friday for about two hours. We have various other activities like cooking clubs.

"We have a very, very active volunteering, Garden Club. So there's going to be a real loss of the centre."

Dale goes on to explain that Drylaw, which is considered a deprived area, has very little in terms of community assets.

"There's only the church down the road and that is itself is under threat of amalgamation" He explained.

"So if both these community hubs are lost, there'd been no activities and nothing at all left for after school clubs. Things for senior citizens too."
