A plan to take people on spectacular guided walks up the Forth Bridge for the first time has been given the green light.

Planning permission has been approved by Edinburgh Council for Network Rail’s ‘Forth Bridge Experience’.

Permission to create a single-storey reception hub and car park in South Queensferry has also been granted.

The experience won’t be for those who struggle with heights as groups of up to 15 people will be strapped to harnesses and guided along a special walkway to a viewing platform at the top of the bridge which sits 110m (367ft) above the Forth.

The plans are similar to that of the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb which sees visitors head to the top of the iconic structure where they can enjoy a view of the city and some of its famous landmarks.

It is expected that the new project will create around 38 jobs in the local area.

We’re promised the reception hub’s design aims to minimise the impact on the surrounding environment whilst offering a stunning view of the Forth Bridge.

It will be used for preparing those heading out on the bridge walk as well as being an access point to the structure.

Network Rail Scotland’s director of engineering and asset management Alan Ross said: “It’s great to see our plans for the Forth Bridge Experience moving forward.

“The team has worked hard to create this exciting design and we’re looking forward to working with the successful contractor to bring these plans to life.”

And if you don't want to wait until the experience begins, Barnardo's is running a charity event offering the chance to climb the bridge...
