The result of a vote will be announced later.

The result of a vote on admitting women members at Open Championship venue Muirfield will be announced on Thursday.

Muirfield and Royal Troon are the only remaining host clubs to maintain a male-only membership policy after Royal St George's voted last year to accept women members.

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews moved to end its 260-year-old male-only membership policy in 2014.

Muirfield, owned and run by The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, has been reviewing its criteria for two years and the results of a postal ballot of the club's members will be announced by captain Henry Fairweather.

A two-thirds majority of its 750 members is said to be required for any change to take place.

Muirfield in Gullane, East Lothian, last staged the Open in 2013.

Royal Troon, host of this year's championship, announced a review of its membership policy in January 2015, but the outcome is not expected to be known until later this year.

The club considers itself a special case as it shares facilities with the Ladies Golf Club, Troon.

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon last month said there should be nowhere in Scotland off limits to women, adding that she hoped Royal Troon ''reflects on that''.
