The Crown Office is looking into the possibility of extending the sentence of a teenager who knocked down and killed Edinburgh nurse Jill Pirrie.

18-year-old Dylan Jenkin was sentenced to six years in a young offenders institute last Monday for killing the 33-year-old on Old Dalkeith Road, as she walked home from a nursing shift at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Jenkin had no insurance and was driving a £40 Ford Ka he bought on Gumtree when he ploughed into mum-of-one Jill Pirrie, 33, as she walked home from a shift at Edinburgh's Royal Infirmary.

The horror crash happened on Old Dalkeith Road on May 12th after Jenkin lost control of his car on a bend.

Jill Pirrie's sister in law released a statement after the sentencing saying: "Six years for taking a young life is not my idea of justice, it's a sick joke. As far as I'm concerned that is an insult to Jill's family, friends and colleagues.

"Jill dedicated her career to care for others, it's a disgrace that our legal system didn't care for her."

In a statement, the Crown Office said it is considering whether the sentence is "unduly lenient".
