Locals to be consulted on future of Craigmillar baby memorial
It's being moved to accommodate the new Castlebrae High School
People in Craigmillar are telling Forth News they hope a local memorial for a baby boy finds a fitting new home - as a new school is to be built on its current site.
Plans to replace Castlebrae High School with a new building have been approved by councillors.
A memorial garden, dedicated to a baby, named Craig Millar by the local community, who was found dead on the site in 2001, will be built as part of the new school.
However the memorial stone which sits there at the moment will be moved.
Local Minister Liz Henderson held the funeral for the little boy.
She told Forth News: "I think people felt there should be a dignity because of the indignity that happened to the baby - and therefore felt there should be a place within the community where people could remember.
"I think it was their way of showing that this bad thing happened, but there is a lot of good here.
"The outpouring of sympathy from the community surprised even me. I knew this was a caring community, but people were genuinely upset.
"You always remember the great tragedies, the great sadnessess and the great losses when you're a minister."
An Edinburgh Council spokesperson said: “A local funeral director has offered to remove the memorial before work starts on the site for the new school.
"They will store the memorial safely, clean it up and then we’ll ask the local community where they feel is the most appropriate place for it to be relocated in Craigmillar.
"It’s been agreed that the original site in the school grounds will now contain a memorial garden which will provide an area for quiet reflection.”
