Scottish scientists trialling new pill to tackle covid symptoms
The Prime Minister says anti-viral medications could be the key to avoiding another wave of coronavirus infections.
Scientists at Glasgow University are beginning a clinical trial of a drug which could help to treat mild coronavirus symptoms.
It is thought Favipiravir, which is commonly used as flu medication in Japan, stops viruses from multiplying inside the body.
Researchers are looking for 300 volunteers who have recently tested positive for Covid-19, to examine the effect of it on their symptoms.
People who live in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde area, are aged over 16, and who can swallow pills, may be eligible to take part.
Dr Janet Scott from the University said: "We are really keen to get volunteers in so that we can get the results out as quickly as possible."
Another line of defence
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said anti-viral drugs could be used to bolster the UK's defence against another wave of coronavirus.
Dr Scott added: "I'm really pleased that there is a political will getting behind oral anti-viral drugs for use in the community.
"We really need to move on and get our trial finished, and the faster we have volunteers coming forward the faster that will happen."
