Cosmetic surgery expert warns of rise in "underground" clinics in Edinburgh
A cosmetic surgery expert is telling Forth News she's concerned about the rise in "underground" clinics offering treatments.
Figures show more than 80% of procedures in the UK - including lip-fillers and botox - are carried out by non-medical professionals.
Jackie Partridge is a qualified practicioner and is the oc-owner of Edinburgh-based dermaclinic. She says she is seeing a worrying increase in the number of clinics offering procedures by non-medical professionals.
She tells Forth News: "There are more and more facilities opening up. This is quite alarming because its perhaps someone hoping to make a quick buck but not actually becoming an expert in their field.
"I've seen a patient who was treated by a non-medical practicioner who had overfilled her lips to the point that they bled every night on her pillow. She'd been reassured by the non-medic that this was perfectly normal, which of course is not the case.
"It's incredibly dangerous for people to be seen by non-medics, because they are not aware of how to properly deal with complications or medical inaccuracies.
"Personally I would love to see dermal-fillers becoming prescription-only medications, I think that would add an extra layer of safety and security for the general public. I also hope to see it become law that you can only recieve filler treatements from a professional practicioner."
