We take a look at the potential replacements.

Hearts are set to begin their search for a new head coach after they agreed terms with MK Dons for Robbie Neilson to take over the English side.

We've been taking a look at the leading contenders to replace him.

IAN CATHRO (pictured)

The 30-year-old Newcastle assistant coach is already the front-runner with the bookmakers, having been handed his chance in the professional game by Hearts director of football Craig Levein. Then Dundee United boss Levein brought Cathro into the Tannadice youth academy at the age of 22 after being impressed with his work on a private coaching course.

Cathro went on to work for the Scottish Football Association's performance school project before moving to Portuguese top-flight side Rio Ave as assistant to Nuno Santos after the pair met on a coaching course. They then worked together at Valencia before Cathro left for Newcastle to work under Steve McClaren in the summer of 2015. The former Forfar and Brechin youth player, whose former students include Hearts centre-back John Souttar, remained at St James' Park after Rafa Benitez took charge.

Hearts use the Box Soccer coaching firm which Cathro developed to help their young players and Levein previously described Cathro as a genius'' for his coaching skills. Levein failed to persuade Cathro to join him in a different capacity at Tynecastle in 2014 but an offer of head coach would surely succeed.

STEVEN PRESSLEY

The former Falkirk manager is out of work following spells with Coventry and Fleetwood, having quit the latter two weeks before the start of this season. The former Scotland international, who was appointed Hearts captain by Levein, has previously stated he would like to continue his career in England but he might be tempted by a return to Tynecastle.

His strong personality might not lend itself to working under a director of football, regardless of any past relationship.

PAUL HARTLEY

Hartley, 40, has turned Dundee's season around in recent weeks after losing key attacking players Kane Hemmings and Greg Stewart early in the season. The transformation has continued his impressive start in management, which saw him lead Alloa to two promotions and Dundee to one before making the top six on their return to the top flight.

The former Celtic and Scotland midfielder credited Levein with taking his game to a new level during his playing days at Hearts. Dundee would put up a fight if their Ladbrokes Premiership rivals approached them.

PETER HOUSTON

A long-time assistant to Levein at Hearts, Leicester, Dundee United and Scotland, combining the latter role with the manager's job at Tannadice following his mentor's departure. Houston has proved himself as his own man since, leading United to the Scottish Cup and Falkirk to a play-off final last season.

The 58-year-old has a strong emotional bond with Falkirk, where he spent the majority of his playing days, and he might not have any decision to make as Hearts look likely to employ a younger man having given Neilson the job aged 33.

JON DALY

The current Hearts Under 20s coach played under Director of Football Craig Levein at Dundee Utd. He'll take charge of the side alongside Andy Kirk for tomorrow's clash with Ross County, as the club look to further cement their second place status in the Premiership.
