MSPs will debate plans to tackle pollution this afternoon as climate change activists continue their protest outside the Scottish Parliament.

The campaigners say they will form a 'human chain' around Holyrood from around 9:30am.

The Extinction Rebellion group set up camp outside the building at the weekend.

On Monday, several people were arrested after protestors blocked Lothian Road, a main route in Edinburgh city centre.

The action began at around 4pm and lasted for about six hours.

Some protesters were lying on the road, locked together, while others appeared to have glued themselves to the surface of the street.

Police Scotland, who said they carried out "enforcement action" as a result of the disruption, said that a "small number" of arrests had taken place.

Earlier, protesters also took to the Royal Mile, at its junctions with North Bridge and George IV Bridge, where attempts to stage road blocks were swiftly broken up by police.

The various protests caused travel delays, with a number of bus routes diverted until Monday evening.
