Three people have been arrested after climate protestors staged a demonstration at Edinburgh Castle on Wednesday.

Members of the 'This is Rigged' group say they smashed the glass case around the Stone of Destiny.

Two women and a man - all in their twenties - were arrested in connection with damage caused.

In a statement released on social media, the group said: “We live through multiple intersecting crises - from climate to the cost of living, we are at the mercy of modern-day lairds who profit off our suffering, and impotent politicians who do nothing to stop this. Food is a human right. Hunger is a political choice.

"So, why have This is Rigged smashed the case that houses the Stone of Destiny? We are asking you: what is Scotland’s destiny? In the midst of this fear and instability, greed and profiteering, what is Scotland’s future? We care deeply for our heritage, but protecting heritage fundamentally means protecting people and, as it stands, our government is failing to do this."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 10.45am on Wednesday, 15 November, we were called to a report of a small protest within Edinburgh Castle.

“Officers attended and two women aged 20 and 24 years, and a 20-year-old man were arrested in connection with damage caused.

“Enquiries are ongoing."
