'Chill-out zones' to brighten up Edinburgh city centre
Three installations will give locals and tourists somewhere to escape the crowds.
Plans for free 'chill-out' zones in Edinburgh have been unveiled, giving locals and tourists somewhere to escape the city centre crowds.
Organisers say the Edinburgh Lumen event will feature 'stunning immersive visual and sound displays' which will create an 'aura of calm'.
Three installations will be in place from 8 February to 11 March at a reported cost to the city council of £80,000.
Serenity Gardens will turn St Andrew Square into a peaceful haven with a bespoke lighting design, accompanied by calming music.
Just off George Street, at the side the Assembly Rooms, locals and visitors will find Moments Lane with three animated scenes projected on to walls.
The final installation 'Ocean of Light' will feature a large immersive walkthrough experience, over five metres high and made up of 12,000 individual suspended lights.
The event has been created and produced by NL Productions for the city council.
Cllr Donald Wilson, Culture and Communities Convener, said: "Edinburgh Lumen is our most ambitious light display yet.
"As the home of art and culture all year round, these unique pieces of public art have been specially designed for the landscape and for the people of Edinburgh to enjoy.
"They promise to adorn the city centre with a constellation of lights to guide us into spring and I am sure the artwork will draw an impressive footfall.
