This year marks a remarkable milestone for Radio Forth as we celebrate 50 years of broadcasting to the people of Edinburgh, the Lothians, Fife, and Falkirk.

From the first transmission on 22nd January 1975 to its position today as one of Scotland’s leading commercial radio stations, Radio Forth has been at the heart of the community, delivering music, news, and entertainment for half a century.

The Beginnings of Radio Forth

Radio Forth began broadcasting from studios in the basement of the iconic Forth House in Edinburgh’s Forth Street as the commercial radio industry remained in its infancy. Success was far from certain. The station’s mission was clear from the start: to entertain, inform, and connect with its listeners. The first voice on-air was that of the Richard Findlay, who introduced Radio Forth to an eager audience with the words ‘This, for the very first time, is Radio Forth’. The first song played was January, by the rock band Pilot who were founded in Edinburgh.

The big breakthrough came during the hard winter of 1978/79. Gritter drivers went on strike as snow covered the city and beyond, leaving many people stranded in their homes. Programming was dedicated to helping those in need, leading police to describe the station as the ‘fourth emergency service’. Radio Forth had proved its worth as a valuable part of the community.

A Soundtrack to Life

Over the decades, Radio Forth has been the soundtrack to countless local memories. From chart-topping hits to unforgettable anthems, the station has always championed great music, both local and international. Who could forget the rise of Scottish artists like Simple Minds, The Proclaimers, and Lewis Capaldi—all supported and celebrated by Forth.

But music is just part of the story. Radio Forth has also kept its listeners informed, broadcasting breaking news, weather, and travel updates that are vital to the community. From historic events to local campaigns, the station has always been there to keep Edinburgh and the surrounding areas in the know.
