A justice reform campaigner is heading to Holyrood to ask MSPs to support a petition calling for a rule change asking people to declare criminal convictions when applying to university.

Ellie Wilson from Glasgow was raped by her boyfriend who was then allowed to enrol on another course while waiting to go on trial and being found guilty.

She told Forth 1: "At the moment, there is no guidance for dealing with cases like this and there should be a clear policy for what universities should be doing if they do admit a sex offender or someone suspected of committing a sexual crime.

"This is all about keeping students safe and creating a unified approach to safeguarding everyone."

Ellie is teaming up with Scottish Conservative MSP Pam Gosal to launch the petition and thinks sex offenders should be banned from campuses altogether.

She added: "These people should be restricted to online classes and that means they are not being denied an education, but we wouldn't allow paedophiles to work in schools.

"Nor would we allow terrorists to fly planes."

We have approached the Scottish Government for comment.
