Celtic captain Callum McGregor has put pen to paper on a new five-year deal.

The 28-year old came through the youth system at the Parkhead side and was handed the captain's armband after Scott Brown's departure in the summer.

He has now agreed to an extended contract that will see him through to the summer of 2026.

McGregor has won fourteen major honours in his time at the club and has scored 54 goals in 338 appearances.

He told Celtic TV: ā€œIā€™m absolutely delighted. Itā€™s a proud moment again to extend my stay at the club.

'The clubā€™s very close to my heart. Iā€™ve been here for a number of years now, Iā€™m happy here, I love my football and representing this club, and I want to stay here for as long as I can.'

ā€œThis is a new chapter and Iā€™m desperate to see the five years out and if Iā€™ve done that, then that means itā€™s been a pretty successful time again.

ā€œThatā€™s the new motivation for me personally, to make sure this club wins silverware and get it back to that successful place where we were two, three, four seasons ago.ā€

Ange Postecoglou said: ā€œItā€™s brilliant news for the club. Obviously it was an important year for Cal stepping up to be the new captain and heā€™s already shown outstanding qualities

ā€œHe espouses the values that Iā€™m after. He understands what weā€™re trying to build and, on and off the field, heā€™s not just talking about it, heā€™s living it and heā€™s showing the behaviour that I want leaders to show, and as I said, heā€™s just taken his first steps but I think that itā€™s exciting with whatā€™s ahead.ā€
