Caledonian Sleeper comes into public ownership

The Caledonian Sleeper has moved to Scottish Government ownership, replacing the old arrangement with Serco Caledonian Sleepers Limited.
The service runs between London Euston and a number of Scottish cities, including Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
It is the second rail franchise to come under public ownership in Scotland, after ScotRail was taken over by the government in April last year.
Minister for Transport, Fiona Hyslop, believes it will be a new era for the service, saying: “In recent years, the Caledonian Sleeper has flourished, with increasing numbers of people using its unique journey opportunities.
“The service plays an important role in showcasing the best of Scotland and I look forward to building on that success in the years to come.”
A new era
The decision came after Scottish ministers announced the franchise would not be rebased in October last year.
There was a review into the options available to continue the service, and ultimately it was brought under public ownership/
Ms Hyslop added: ““It is fitting that we recognise the successes of the staff and management at the Caledonian Sleeper who have transformed this service, and who will remain as valued members of the team.
“I give my reassurances that there is a continued role for them to play in the future success of the service.”
