Caley Thistle have announced former Ross County assistant Billy Dodds as their new permanent manager.

The former Scotland international and Rangers, Aberdeen and Dundee United forward had been working alongside former interim boss Neil McCann during the second half of last season's Championship season.

Last term Inverness narrowly missed out on the play-off places, and now face a fifth season in the second tier of Scottish football, however they rallied strongly under McCann and Dodds when they stepped in from February onwards.

They racked up 18 points from 13 games and climbed into contention for the play-offs from having been in danger at the foot of the table.

It will now be up to Dodds to sustain that end-of-season form, following on from the interim spell under McCann, with former manager John Robertson now moving up to take on the new role of Sporting Director.

During Dodds' time at Ross County working alongside Jim McIntyre the club lifted the League Cup with their 2-1 success over Hibernian in 2016's final.

Following the announcement on Caley Thistle's website, club CEO Scot Gardiner said: “I am very pleased to be able to confirm Billy as Head Coach after a rigorous interview process last week and I am also grateful to Billy for entering into that process in good faith.”

“While Billy was always our initial favourite for the position given his input and showing during the last 6 weeks or so of the season, I explained to him that we would be doing the club and the fans a disservice if we did not go through the process of first inviting applications and then hosting face to face interviews.”

“Billy understood this instantly and agreed that we would be correct to go down that route, confident in his own ability to come through the process. Very helpfully and in the face of us speaking to another 3 of the excellent candidates who made up our shortlist, he remained the best man for the job at the end of that process and will now take up the position with immediate effect.”
