A section of water pipe which burst twice in less than a week, causing flooding in Bathgate, will not be brought back into use.

Around 20 properties in the Wester Inch estate were damaged last Wednesday and then again on Saturday when the pipe failed sending a torrent of water racing down streets.

Scottish Water engineers carried out extensive checks and have decided the 27-inch water pipe will not be returned into service.

The pipe was used to serve over 25,000 properties across Bathgate, Blackburn and Livingston, and changes have been made to the wider network to keep all homes and businesses supplied.

Mark McEwen, Scottish Water’s customer service general manager, said: “We recognise the impact that these bursts have had on our customers.

"We have established after detailed analysis and significant changes that we can operate the local water supply network in future without the need to use this particular section of water pipe.

"We will be holding a further public meeting this coming Sunday, when we will explain what we have been doing since the bursts occurred, and answer any questions from customers".
