Artificial surfing lake in Edinburgh given green light
An artificial surfing lake in Edinburgh has been given planning permission.
Wavegarden Scotland, which will be the first of its kind in Scotland, will see the transformation of Craigpark Quarry pit in Ratho in to a huge lagoon with wave machines.
It will be the same size as six football pitches and will generate 1,000 waves an hour.
The multi-million pound facility is now estimated to open in 2020 and could create up to 130 jobs.
Andy Hadden, the co-founder of Tartan Leisure Ltd which is developing the site, says: "We are absolutely delighted as a project team to get the green light after all these years of hard work and diligence. We just can't wait to get it up and running and show the people of Scotland what a fantastic world-class facility this is.
"When we are up and running there will be lots of people introduced to the sport, and enjoying the effects outdoor activity. But we also believe we can create an absolutely top performance training facility for elite athletes."
