A 20-year-old man's fighting for his life in hospital following a two-car crash on the A7.

He was driving a red Seat Ibiza just north of Galashiels when it was involved in a collision with a black Seat Ibiza travelling in the opposite direction.

Emergency services raced to the scene near Torwoodlee Golf Club after the alarm was raised last night (Monday) around 9.10pm.

And the driver of the red Seat Ibiza was rushed to hospital, where medical staff describe his condition as "critical".

The driver of the black Seat Ibiza was examined by ambulance staff and did not require hospital treatment.

The road - between Edinburgh and the Borders - was closed for several hours while the wreckage was cleared and officers examined the scene.

Police say an investigation is underway to establish the full circumstances of the incident and appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Sergeant Jill Kirkpatrick said: “Enquiries carried out so far have established that another black car, make currently unknown, was in front of the red Seat prior to the collision and I would ask the driver of that vehicle to contact us as they may have information which could assist our enquiries.

“I would appeal to anyone who was on the A7 around the time of the incident to contact us with any information or dash cam footage as it could prove vital in our investigation.”

Anyone with information is asked to all Police Scotland via 101, quoting incident number 3191 of Monday, 27 December, 2021.

It's not the first serious crash on that stretch of road. In August, two motorcyclists were taken to hospital for treatment following a crash near Buckholm Corner.
