Edinburgh Council is pushing ahead with 20mph limits on the majority of the city's roads.

The move is a first for Scotland and will start in the summer.

Every residential and shopping street in the capital will soon be covered by the lower speed restrictions.

Only main roads in and out of the capital will retain 30mph or 40mph limits.

The scheme will start in the city centre in July, covering an area from Queen Street to the Meadows before being rolled out.

The plan is getting the green light after an official consultation received just 54 objections.

The limited opposition comes despite thousands of people signing a petition against the move and liking a 'say no to 20mile per hour' Facebook page.
