How would you feel about walking 100 miles in less than 72 hours?

That is the goal of Ameed Versace, who will start making his way from Dundee to Glasgow this morning.

The 62-year-old is raising money for the Beatson Cancer Charity after his brother received treatment there earlier this year.

He told us:

"It's an illness that afflicts many people up and down the country and I loved their attention to detail.

"When I got to meet the Beatson Charity support team I realised how wonderful they were as a team and their commitment to helping others."

The route will take Ameed from Dundee to Dunfermline, through to Edinburgh then finishing at The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre in Glasgow.

Ameed said it was important for him to give back:

"I went to visit him my brother and I was very moved when I saw him lying on his bed.

“He was receiving amazing care from the doctors and nurses. People couldn't do enough for him. He was obviously very unwell but he insisted on rising from the bed and greeting me properly and fully - and that moved me.

“As I was leaving, I thought to myself, if we’re talking about caring for humanity, there's no greater respect that we could give, but to do something for The Beatson.”

Maisie McCormick, community fundraising manager at Beatson Cancer Charity, said the organisation is so grateful to Ameed for his support.

She said:

“The walk Ameed is taking on will be no mean feat – we wish him the best of luck and look forward to cheering him on at The Beatson.

“Support like this allows us to continue offering our existing services and develop new ones to enhance the care and support cancer patients and their families receive during treatment.”
