Trigger Point: A round-up of what happened in series 2

Ahead of the third series

Author: Alex RossPublished 11th Jun 2025

Following the first series which came to a dramatic end in February 2022, ITV/STV bosses and show writer Jed Mercurio were quick to renew Trigger Point for a second series, with actress Vicky McClure reprising her role as heroic EXPO officer Lana Washington.

The six-part series landed in January 2024, and the show was such a success it's now been renewed for two further series, with the third instalment set to land in the Autumn. As we count down the weeks, here's a complete round-up of what happened in Trigger Point series two, and all the information about the show you could possibly need.

What happened in Trigger Point series 2?

Following the dramatic end of series one, which saw Lana severely shaken and emotional after she prevented a major terror plot at a political rally, the second series opens with her giving a security briefing in London, after returning from a six-month secondment in Ukraine. Starting with a literal bang, episode one sees a power station being blown up by a drone, leading to Lana to rush to the scene alongside EXPO team members Hass and John, where they quickly discovered two other bombs.

The series premiere also sees Lana reunite with her ex DCI Thom Youngblood, realising she in fact does still love him despite pushing him away in series one. Despite Thom now being in a relationship with DS Helen Morgan, Lana and Thom share a kiss in emotional circumstances, before he gets pushed down an elevator shaft, falling to his death.

Whilst the hunt begins for those responsible for the terror attack, the team mourn the loss of DCI Youngblood and later discover he was pushed deliberately to his death.

The story then takes another twist when a man called Alex informs the team of a planned attack, and despite being told by Commander Francis not to fully trust him, Lana takes it upon herself to support Alex, going against protocol.

In the high-octane series finale, Lana is kidnapped by a terrorist group called The Wave, whilst her parents Jeff and Val are also taken hostage by the same group. The terrorists coerce Lana into helping them with a bomb attack on the Home Secretary, but using her knowledge, she's able to switch the bombs at the last second, blowing up the van with the terrorists in instead.

Although she is arrested following the attack, Lana later gets exonerated as the team discover more and later dismantle The Wave.

Following the drama of the six episodes, series two ends with Lana and the team attending Danny's wedding.
